I feel bad for..... April 29, 2009 edition

I think I am going to make this a weekly blog post, who do I feel bad for this week. This week number one is easy, at least for me, being in Michigan, with most of my friends Lions fans. *Note: The rest is in no order what so ever.

I feel bad for Lions fans... They have all this hope, that a good draft will come, and then they are crushed, at least the ones I talked to, and know. I think they can live with Stafford, though they still are not happy about it, there other two picks in the top 33, was not at all what any of them wanted or hoped for

I feel bad for my self and all the other true Pistons fans who had to go though such a tough season, of course 6 conference finals in a row isn't bad at all, and it was a great run, now it's just time to rebuild

I feel bad for Edwin Jackson, especially after last night, he pitches 6 scoreless innings of 4 hit baseball against the yanks only to watch the bull pen come in and give up 10 runs in the 7th, in a 11-0 lose. That is 2 great starts already that he has had ruined by the bull pen. I texted this to my buddy Rob last night, and I mean it... If E Jackson kills any or all of the tigers bull pen, no charges should be filed.

I feel bad for KG, I have always liked him, and even though I don't like the Celtics, You only get a small window in pro sports to be good, and a big chance for them to get back to the finals and repeat is basically over without him. It gives the Cavs basically a free ride. As a basketball fan I would love to see the Celtics and Cavs in a hard fought 7 game series... now, I still think the Bulls can win the next two and beat the Celtics in the first round.

I feel bad for M. Stafford, I am not a big fan of his, and it is hard to feel bad for someone who has 42 million guaranteed to him, but he is going to the Lions and thus has no chance to be a good NFL qb. He is going to be called on too early, because the team will be bad and the pressure the front office hears, they will make the coach play him, and he will fail... It's too bad, the kid never had a chance

I feel bad for Mel Keiper who know has to go back in to his cave until next April

I feel bad for my fantasy baseball teams, both of them are really hurting with Hanley Ramirez injuring. Hanley please come back soon.. oh yeah, I also feel bad for him, getting hurt... also if A. Ramirez wants to come back soon too, that would also be great.

I feel bad for any Hornet fan that actually had to watch that 58 point blowout, that must have sucked. I also feel bad for cp3, he deserves better. But everyone has bad games.

I feel bad for the Spurs, again I don't like them, in fact, I hate them but like I said before you only get a short window to be good in pro sports, and with Manu being hurt one of their last chances was taken away from them, and that is too bad. I really feel a true fan wants to earn it, sure you want to win, but you don't want a lot of * next to it either. You don't want that other team's fans to be able to say, yeah you won, but we didn't have one of, or are, best player. Cause deep down you know it's true, and you know that had a big factor on the outcome.

I feel bad for Marty Brodeur, 2 goals in a 1:20 of game 7. up 3-2, to lose 4-3. ouch. I love Marty and the Devils are my hockey team, though being in Michigan I also wish the Wings well, since they do well, my friends are happy, and everyone has more fun. Losses like last night are hard to come back from. But he is one of, if not the, best GK of all time, and he will be fine. But I do feel bad for him, the Devils team and organization, and die hard fans who follow them much closer then I do.

I feel bad for M Curry because he gets a lot of blame for what happened to the Pistons this year (from me included) But really it wasn't his fault. It was Joe D's for hiring a rookie head coach, with NO HEAD COACHING EXPERIENCE, to try to be the coach of a veteran team trying to make one more run. He was coaching guys that for the most part were his friends that use to play over him... why would they listen to him. They didn't respect him. He was basically Joe D's yes man. He would play Stuck more minutes before he was ready, and Joey D could turn it around like they are rebuilding for 2010, and Curry is learning on the job. Curry is a bad NBA coach right now, but it really isn't his fault and for that I feel bad for him... but because we have to put up with it.. I again feel bad for Pistons fans.. like myself

I feel bad for my wife because she hates sports and has to deal with me watching multiple games a night. She puts up with it well, and I am lucky to have her. I'm right, you're wrong.

End of a era

I am going to try to put this in to words the best I can, But I will be the first to admit I am not the best with that. But here it goes.

Yesterday was a sad day for me in my sports life. The Pistons got swept by the Cavs and are out of the playoffs. Breaking a streak of 6 conference finals in a row. This streak really was broken when another streak was broken. 6 years with 50 wins or more. This year of course has been a tough year for the Pistons. You start the year off 3-0, 2 with Billups then you make the trade, and one more win before AI got there, and then you have a terrible year, and get the 8th seed in the playoffs, when in the last week you could have gotten all the way up 6, and played the Magic who they have beaten all 3 times they have played this year, and have eliminated in the playoffs is seems like every year. In stead, you lose a close one to the Bulls at home, and fall all the way to 8 and play the Cavs. But that was a problem all year, loosing close games, the pistons lost several games by 6 points or less, I think it was 12 or something, they said the number during the game yesterday but I wasn't really listening, I love to listen to Hubie Brown, but can't stand Terrico. But loosing close games has to do with two things, number one, no leadership, and that starts with a rookie head coach in way over his head, and two, not having that one guy that everyone knows is getting the ball down the stench in a close game, some games it would be Iverson, some games Stuck, Rip, or Ta Ta.. In doing this, no one knows their roles, they never get use to each other and understand their roles. Ta ta, Sheed and Rip are made you trade Billups and you get the year the Pistons just had.

It is true that the Pistons wasn't going to win a title this year anyway, so then the question is, if you are going to have a rookie coach, and then trade your leader away anyway, why not blow the entire thing up. I am sure one reason was Joe D still thought with the team as is they would still be no worse then 4th in the east in the playoffs. No one could see this coming, with them getting the 8th seed. But why not wait on the trade then, see how you are doing at the all star break, if you are around the 6th seed, then make the trade, if you are around the 3rd seed, give it more one go. But again, I will say, and my brother in law gives me crap about this almost every day, but I will keep saying this, the trade was not about this year, it is about next year, and the year after, we know have over 30 million dollars coming off our cap.. and that's just two players. Walter Hermann's 2 million is also coming off, but I actually hope they resign him, cause I like him.. he actually plays hard. So time will tell, do they get a Bosh, do they trade for some more picks, I am really hoping they get Steph Curry in the draft. They have options, they still have tradeable pieces, and cap space, plus like the 15th pick in the draft. All is not lost... yet.

Quickly about this series, let me first say, the Cavs are a much better team then the Pistons right now, I know that, I am not for a minute trying to argue that, but I must say, one guy should never have more ft attempts in a series then a entire team. And where we are at in the NBA right now with the stars getting calls, Dwade, Kobe, and of course Lebron getting the most, almost makes the game unwatchable. I mean could you imagine how many point Jordan would score in his prime if he played in the NBA with today's rules. Teams were so physical with him and did things to him then, that may not have even been called fouls, that now you would get ejected for. Every time Lebron goes to the basket they call a foul, wheat er he gets fouled or not, and of course, sometimes he does, but game 3 was close in the 4th and 6 trips in a row the Cavs got an and one, the Pistons didn't draw one foul on the Cavs. Lebron is a freak, he is 6'8, like 245 of pure muscle, and fast, he doesn't need any help, he just runs over guys, and gets fouls called on them. Again, he is too good, he doesn't need any more help, if you look at him wrong, it shouldn't be a foul. Again, in saying this, yes I know the Cavs are the better team, and I give them credit, and any TRUE fan in Cleveland who has been though a lot of losing between the Cavs, Browns and Indiana's I do feel happy for them, because I have been on both sides of it, and I think it is important as a true fan to respect the tough time other true fans go though in their sports cheering life in supporting the schools and teams that they do. So as much as it hurt to watch these last 4 games, I have been on that side of it too, and I know how good it feels. A true fan, doesn't leave during the bad times.

In saying that, I can see both sides of the issue with the Pistons fans and their attendance at these last two games. It was even reported the Pistons sent out emails to Cavs season ticket holders to try to sell seats, as low as 12. There was a time where it was very very hard to get Pistons tickets, and for Playoff tickets, you would have to spend at least 50 bucks, and now they are trying to give them to the other teams fans for under 15. In one way, I say same on the Pistons fans who didn't want to go and still support their team. Note: I would have gone if it wasn't for a AAU tournament that I was coaching in, and Friday night my wife had to go to a work party, and thus I had to watch Hailey. In the other side of the argument, I would say, I don't blame any Piston fan who didn't want to go to the game, because why support a team that has given up. Not that you stop being a fan for good, but if the players have given up on the season, and are making tee times, and vacation plains why should the fans pay money to watch them not play hard. That was the thing I liked about Bynum, herrmann, Max, Amir, and even Kwame, is they still at least played hard when they were in. As for the Pistons trying to sell those tickets to Cavs fans and making the Palace the Q north, I don't have a problem with that, because in the end, it is still a business, and you need to make money, and you don't do that, if no one is there.

Another thing that makes yesterday's last game sad, and especially for me was that it is without a doubt the last game for Sheed as a Piston. I love Sheed, though he does make me upset a lot, because he could dominate if he wanted to play hard, and post, he is almost unstoppable, instead, he doesn't get past the 3 point line on most times down the floor, and he rarely plays hard, somehow I still love him. I have 6 Sheed jerseys that soon will need to go in to retirement and I will need to get a new Piston to be my favorite and get their jersey. Note: If they draft Curry it is already over, I will have a Curry jersey before he plays a game for the Pistons.

It was a nice run, 6 conference finals in a row, 2 NBA finals, and one title, though you could be down and say they should have gotten to more finals and maybe even won another title, that is still a great run for your favorite NBA team. What made it better for me, was when it happened. For the most part the entire run happened while I was in college, of legal drinking age. So the Pistons gave me a excuse, like college kids need one, to go out to a lot of bars, actually using just one, O Kelly's, with a lot of my friends, and watch a lot of playoff games, and drink a lot of beers, and do a lot of shots, and have a great time. The best time for your team to be good is your college years, just because of the natural social aspect. What other time in your life, are you able to get to a sports bar at 3pm, for a 8pm game, just to make sure you get a booth, and drink and have fun with your friends, and stay till 2am. It was a great time, and I would not trade it for the world. From doing shots for the first 3 of each half, to Potter riding the pony around the bar during 4th quarter points. To we are the champions playing and everyone celebrating dancing on tables, it was great moments that I am happy to be a part of. Those moments are better, when you go through the tough times before and after them. And even though there were a lot of losses, a lot of times leaving the bar upset because we gave a game away, or like in 06 when Lebron would dunk on our entire team, it was a great 6 years. For that, I thank the Pistons, I thank them for 6 great years, and a lifetime of memories, with great friends, some good food, and some cold drinks. We all should be so lucky.

Now, I look forward to the NBA draft, and what the Pistons will do in the off season, and what moves they are going to make so they can start another run. One era is indeed ending with the Pistons, but another will soon begin. Go Pistons, I will always be a fan. I'm right, you're wrong.

Draft recap

The NFL draft this weekend went well. Though I think I only had 6 guys right, as far as players, team, and spot, I did get a few more teams and players right, just at different spots, like Denver took Ayers but at 18, not 12, and the jets did take Sanchez, but they had to go to 5 to get him, not 8. With my picks not being great aside, I have a few quick thoughts on the draft.

- I love the Giants picks, Hicks will help right away, as will both of their 2nd round picks, I like Sintim a lot, good fit as a lb, and then Beatty is 6'6 and after providing depth for a few years, could very well be the starting LT of the future.. not bad for the end of the 2nd round. They added depth, and filled some holes, great draft

-Watching the draft with Lions fans might be the funniest thing you will ever do in your life. From pick 20 to 33, may have be the highlight. After they took the TE at 20 my friends were mad, they wanted Ray Maualuga there. But then he falls, and you can see it in their faces, hope. We can still get him. With each passing pick, the tension mounted. Text messages are going back and forth between them and our other buddy that we use to live with Phil, in Minn. Chaz is sitting on the floor waiting, hoping. Rob makes the statement that if the Lions don't take him they are stupid, Mckay says, I will think what Steelers jersey to buy if they don't. Chaz even mentioned maybe going down to the D and killing everyone. Then the pick comes, he is still on the board. It is not often in life that you get a second chance. And here the rest of the league gave the Lions that chance. We know you were 0-16, and you need a middle lb.. so, here you go guys. Then th pick comes and what happens. They take Louis Delmas. A Safety out of western Michigan. Chaz falls face down on the floor, laid out, not believing what happened. Rob almost laughs.. this is why the Lions suck. Phil sends a I hate the fucking Lions text. Another buddy of mine Greg sends a the Lions are the clippers of the NFl, what the hell are they doing, text. Just like that, hope was gone. Rob says, I know they will be back picking this high again next year. I say I just went from not minding the Lions to hating them. That of course has more to do with where delmas went to school, western Michigan, I graduated from Central Michigan, and thus, I do not like them. The day goes on, and I am happy with the Giants picks, at the start of the day, they were all telling me to shut up, don't talk about your 3 super bowl wins, this is the draft, this is the only day of the year Lions fans have to look forward to. And in a way that is true, and then each year, they are disappointed. Chaz when he finally gets up off the floor he can't speak, he then gets out. "I am not talking about it, for 7 days. I will give myself 7 days to process this, and then I will have something to say." If you ever wonder what it is like to be a fan, a true, die hard fan, of a team that sucks.. there you go.

-The Satfford pick is bad IMO because of this. You are the Lions, you know you are going to lose games, so you start 0-5, 0-6, and you got a guy that is getting 42 million guaranteed. You can say Culpepper is your qb, and you are going to play it slow with the young guy, but if he is the face of the team, and you are loosing, and you are paying him all this money, you know what will happen. After ever pick, the fans chant for stafford, after ever loss, all the talk radio and newspapers articles are about playing Stafford, everyone calls in, writes, email, has blogs about, how he should play. So what happens.. Just like Joey, you play a guy before he is ready, he doesn't do well. His confidence is dead, you have no one around him to help him succeed, and he becomes another top choice flop.... you have been warned.

-There may be one thing worse then being a Lions fan, and that is being a Raider fan. Wow, those may have been the worst 2nd round pick ever.. that is classic. Forget Heywood bay at 7, which is funny too, but Michael Mitchell, I mean, that is wonderful. Only AL Davis. Thanks for that.

-day two of the draft, brought a interesting question from another buddy of mine. Is Suzy Kulper hot. He says the voice throws him a bit. But in a wired way, she is just good looking enough. She is no Erin Andrews that is for sure.. but she isn't too bad... this is what guys talk about when they watch 20 hrs of draft coverage.

-Connor Barwin dad wearing those like short black shorts may have been the worst thing I have ever seen. When I texted Phil about it, he laughed and made a commit about how it made all fat people want to have sausage all of a sudden. Very trouble choice of what to wear being on national tv.

-No players from CMU was drafted this year, but I do think a few have a chance to be signed as free agents. I would be shocked if Andrew Hartline, a 3 times all MAC Tackle doesn't get signed. He is a friend of mine and a good guy, so I wish him well. I also think a team would be smart to give QB Brain Brunner a look in camp. I don't think he would make a team, but maybe a practice squad player. He is a very smart young man and would give you no problems. he is one of the best guys you will ever meet, if you are lucky enough to meet him, and he has a good arm. He showed his character in loosing his job by getting hurt, and then every time he was called on, when Dan L got hurt, he lead us to victory. Including beating IU, and out rival WMU, which btw, had two of its db drafted this weekend, and Brunner threw all over them. He is big, strong, good arm, and a smart kid. But if he doesn't, he is also very smart in the classroom, and is a wonderful writer, he will have no problems in life, no matter what he does.

- All in all I was very happy with the Draft, but I do feel bad for Lions fans, mainly rob, chaz, phil, mckay and any other of my good friends who watched in horror. There's always next year. I'm right, you're wrong

NFL Mock Draft

Yes it is that time again, this Saturday and Sunday is the NFL Draft, and while I admit I have not done as much planing and research on it as I usually do, since I first had to wait to college basketball was over, and now I have AAU basketball, plus spending time with my wife and daughter, but I have finally put one together. Some picks will be the same as Mcksay, others will be the same as Mel's, and others are all me, that is just the way it is. With so many stuff out there right now, everyone hears and reads the same stuff, it is just taking a few chances. Also, throwing in a trade or two, just for fun. So, here it is, my mock draft.

1) Lions- M Stafford qb UGA- I don't think they should, but they will.

2) Rams- Jason Smtih OL Baylor- Just like O Pace was, he will be a stud for them for years.

3) Cheifs- Aaron Curry Lb Wake- This is a easy one here, he should go number one

4) Seahwaks- Eugene Monroe OT Virgina- This is where it gets fun, this could be any of like 5 guys

5) Browns- Brain Orakpo DE/LB Texas- I am rolling the dice a little here, I like Orakpo, I hope they do to. They will get a wide out later.. more to come.

6) Bengals- Michael Crabtre WR T Tech- If they trade Chad Johnson, wr is the pick here for sure, I think even if they don't, they will take him, if he is here.

7) Raids- Jeremy Maclin WR Mizzu- Everything you read says Al Davis likes him the most, so why would they not take him.

8) Jets- Mark Sanchez qb USC- Again, he could go as early as 4, but if he falls to 8the Jags trade out, and I think the Jets trade in.

9) Packers- BJ Raji DT BC- Just a beast

10) 49ers- Andre Smith OL Bama- He is too talented to fall out of the top ten, even with all his problems since his last college game. I like they would have gone a DE, but with smith left, they have to.

11) Bills- Aaron Maybin DE PSU- The Bills thank the 49ers for letting Maybin fall to them

12) Broncos- Robert Ayers DE Tenn- I think they need to draft all defense this year, this is a good start.

13) Redskins- Michael Oher OT Ole Miss- They are another team that has a chance to trade up for Sanchez, if they don't, they stay here and get someone to protect Jason Campbell

14) Saints- Malcolm Jenkins DB OSU- Can't be a shout down corner in the NFL, if you ask me... so they will make him a safety, and he will do fine.

15) Texans- Tyson Jackson DE LSU- I think the Texans would be very happy if Tyson is here at 15, if he is, they take him

16) Chragers- Everette Brown DE FSU- This is a decently deep draft for DE, the Chargers get another good one here

17) Jags- Brain Cushing LB USC- The Jags trade down with the Jets, get some extra picks, and a new starting LB

18) Broncos- Darrius Heywood-Bay- WR Maryland- Even though I think Denver should draft all defense in this draft, I have a feeling they take a big talented wide out here

19) Bucs- Josh Freeman QB KSU- I think this is a reach, but everyone else is saying this will be the pick, so lets go with it

20) Lions- Ray Maulaluga LB USC- This may be more of what I think they should do, and this would make my friends Rob and Chaz very happy, so everyone wins. Knowing them, they go with Hicks or Britt, since they need more WR. Only the Lions

21) Eagles- Knowshon Moreno RB UGA- Again, everyone seems to think this is the pick here, so why go against everyone.

22) Viks- Kenny Britt WR Rutgers- Even with drafting some wide outs early in years past.. hows that working Minn, they still have a need, and Britt may actually be the most NFL ready of the WR in the draft

23) Pats- Perry Jerry DT Ole Miss- A run stuffer, and a save pick for the Pats

24) Falcons- Clay Matthews LB USC- This was Pettigrew, until today with the Tony g trade, now, who knows. Lets go with defense, Clay should help them.

25) Dolphins- Vonte Davis DB ILL- Again, don't think he can be a shout down corner in the NFL, but he could be a great safety.

26) Ravens- Brandon Pettigrew TE OK State- He is too talented not to be taken here. Again, would have been drafted by ATL before the trade

27) Colts- Beanie Wells RB OSU-Raise your hand if you are not sold on B Wells.. oh yeah, get um up there. At 27, too good to pass up, Colts take him.

28) Bills Iben Britton OT Zona- You can never have too many Offensive line man

29) Browns- Percy Harvin WR Fl- This is the Browns pick if my G-men finally cave and give the Browns a 1st rounder for B Edwards. I would like to get him for a 2nd and a 4th, that would be fine, but I will take him for a 1, no WR at 29 would be better then him, that is for sure. Browns take Harvin for the speed and the return game.

30) Titans- Hakeem Nicks WR UNC- Titans are happy to get such a flat out stud at 30. To say I have a small man crush on Mr. Nicks would be correct.

31) Cards- James Laurinaitis LB OSU- I just don't see him falling out of the 1st round, I think he is too good of a football player.. but what the hell do I know

32) Steelers- Larry English DE/LB NIU- So this may be a little bit of a reach, and maybe I am showing too much MAC Love, but He is a pass rushing machine, and would be a great pick here. If not here, he will go early in the second round, and become a good pass rusher for someone.

I'm sad I have to wait till 4pm for the first round, but whatever. We have an AAU tournament so I have 3 games during the day anyway, but of course, I will be watching as much as I can, and really looking forward to it. Draft day.. baby. I'm right, you're wrong.

NBA Playoff picks

Well it took the entire 82 game season, but all the playoff match ups are set. As far as picking teams I did well in the playoffs, getting 14 out of 16 total. However, seeds, well that is another story.. Here is what I said during my preseason playoff picks

East:

1) Pistons
8) Hawks
4) Heat
5) Magic
3) Cavs
6) 76ers
2) Celtics
7) Raptors

1) Pistons
4) Heat
3) Cavs
2) Celtics

1) Pistons
2) Celtics

1) Pistons

West:

1) Lakers
8) Mavs
4) Jazz
5) Rockets
3) Horents
6) Suns
2) Spurs
7) Blazers

1) Lakers
5) Rockets
3) Horents
7) Blazers

5) Rockets
3) Horents

3) Horents

In the east the Celtics are the two seed, and that is about it. The Heat are in the 4/5 match up at least. In the west the Lakers are the one seed, and the Rockets are the 5, that's it. So now with the actually match ups, here are my playoff picks

East:
1) Cavs vs 8) Pistons- I would love to say that the Pistons find a way to steal either game one or two, then win at home, and win the series in 6, however, what will happen, the Pistons will win game 3, and lose the series in 5.

4) Hawks vs 5) Heat- This should be a great series. I look forward to a long one, but I see the Heat wining in 6

3) Magic vs 6) 76ers- Big win for phili to get up to 6. I do not fear the magic at all, but I really don't know if phili can win a series either, so magic in 7

2) Celtics vs 7) Bulls- The Celtics are looking like they will be without KG for the entire playoffs. That makes it almost impossible for them to repeat, but do they still have enough to win one series. I am not sure, the Bulls are playing better, and this might be the jump they need. Bulls in 6

1) Cavs vs 5 Heat- A NBA dream, Lebron vs D Wade. Getting ready for some foul calls. I see the Cavs just being too much and the Cavs will win this series in 6. D Wade is good for one win, and the officials are good for another

3) Magic vs 7) Bulls- I don't like the Magic, I think I have mentioned this. The Bulls win this series in 6

1) Cavs vs 7) Bulls- The Bulls run ends here as the Cavs win in 5 games and get to the NBA Finals

West:

1) Lakers vs 8) Jazz- the Jazz are great at home, but bad on the road.. ok, Lakers in 7

4) Blazers vs 5) Rockets- Will the Rockets get out of the first round now, with no T mac. I don't know, they are playing a young team with nothing to lose. All the pressure if on the Rockets. I like it. Blazers in 6

3) Spurs vs 6) Mavs- Two old teams, not close to once they once were. I see a good series, home teams win. Spurs in 7

2) Denver vs 7) Horents- CP 3 wins this series by himself. NO in 6

1) Lakers vs 4) Blazers- Lakers in 5

3) Spurs vs 7) Horents- Spurs too old, and they run out of gas, No in 6

1) Lakers vs 7) Horents- I just realized I have both 7 seeds getting to the conference finals.. oh well, time to have fun. Their run ends here, just like the Bulls, Lakers in 5, and the NBA gets the match up they want.

NBA Finals

1) Cavs vs 1) Lakers- Kobe vs Lebron, Lebron vs Kobe. The league would love this to happen. They want a long long 7 game series. I think they get close, but not 7 games, only 6. Lakers in in 6. MVP of the finals- Kobe.. who else.

I'm right, you're wrong

Tough day

The Tigers lost 10-6, which is not too big of a deal, since they are now back to 500 at 4-4, and really after last year I would be happy with a 500 season, and there is a long way to go, the problem is, they still can't beat the white sox, this is a problem, since they play them 18 or 19 times a year. Hopefully tomorrow will be better. The big problem was tonight when the Bulls beat the Pistons by 3, thanks to the Pistons giving up a one time 11 point lead, and not scoring for the final 3 minutes of the game. What a frustrating year. Even with the trade, and looking forward to the next few years, there is no way anyone would have expected this. After loosing tonight they can now not get the 6th seed, which would have meant the Magic, which is a team they have beaten all 3 times this year, and a team that they have beaten in the playoffs, usually in 5 games, every year for the last 4 or 5 years it seems. I know they have a great record, but in the playoffs, I would not be worried about them at all. Of course now they either have the Celtics, or if they stay at 8, the Cavs. The Cavs will be them no question about it. The Celtics would too, but they have not been playing well of late, so maybe, just maybe, they would have some small chance. I am not giving up on them, not be any means, but it doesn't look good.

I am very excited about our first AAU tournament this weekend in Grand Rapids. Which will also give me a chance to see my sister and brother in law, before they head off to Boston, since she is running in the Boston Marathon this year, and also some of my best friends, Tyler, and his wonderful wife Tara, and hopefully Dave and Dan as well. First tournaments are always a adventure, because even though I have been happy with the practices thus far, and we have one tomorrow and one Thursday, you still never know how your kids will come out. I think we can have a successful spring season though.

It is also time for me to start working on the NFL draft, and I will have a mock draft by the weekend I think. Since that will be only one week till the draft. Even though we do have a tournament that weekend as well, so I will not be able to lay on the coach all day, I am looking forward to the draft, and following it as closely as I can.

Now that was one great good friday

First I want to say, Good Friday is a important day for what it represents in the big picture, and I don't want to make it seem like that isn't important to me. But this is basically a sports blog, and I had one fun, busy Friday. Like I have done before, I have recorded thoughts through out the day into my phone, and they play them back, and write them, JUST AS I SAID IT AT THE TIME. So, sports guy style, here is a timeline of my good Friday.

7:38am- After getting off to a little late start, ha, but I am happy about it, thanks to my wife, thanks honey, but now I am at the gas station feeling up, and then off to Drew's to go to the Tigers home opener, it's about 30 or 31 degrees right now, but it is suppose to get to the high 40's, low 50's today, so it should be a beautiful day for baseball.

9:13am- 9:08am, Drew called me to see how I am, just passed the DTE exit, a wonderful outdoor music facility, I am about 10 miles away from 59, so I am getting closer to Drew's house, and looking forward to a wonderful day.

10:25am- We are on our way to the D, we are getting around 75, so traffic is getting bad now. My friend Tara, jc, just texted me to let me know she slept with Sean Williams of the Nets last night, I am pissed at her.

11:06am- We are at Greek town Casino now, we have waited for a beer for a few minutes already

11:12am- We finally got out beer, it's delicious.. Maybe they should have had more then one bartender for the entire wrap around bar, on a busy day, just a thought.

11:14am- We get in the line for the 9.99 all you can eat buffet at Greek town

11:32am- Sitting down with my first helping at the buffet.

11:48am- Sitting down for my second helping at the buffet. I also finally got my beer. I ordered two beers, one for me, one for drew, and only drew's beer came, now finally mine did, super.

12:21pm- Got some desert and then left Greek town and started heading to Comerica. I have been texted jc to see if she can get us the hook up on some free tickets for the Pistons game tonight to continue this great day.

12:22pm- Just for the update.. since there is more driving to do.. we have only had two beers each.

12:37pm- We walk in to Comerica park, and are heading to our seats

12:41pm- We get to our seats

12:43pm- Highlight of the player introduction, the Tigers new "closer" Brandon Lyon was booo very badly. We pause for a moment of slice for Mr. Andheart, such a sad thing, and then we have the National anthem, complete with a fly bye

1:02pm- Game time temp at Comerica Park, 51 degrees for opening day in Detroit, just gorgeous. A few other quick notes. Kid Rock is on hand and he delivers the game ball to representatives from the 3 big auto makers in Michigan, as they throw out the first pitch.

1:07pm- 1st pitch of the year by Armando, getting ready, the pitch, and ball, a little low.. ball one

1:12pm-Inge with a great web gym to rob J Hamilton of a double, 1-2-3 go the Ragers

1:20pm- 0 runs on no hits, Mags walk, 0-0 end of one.

1:28pm- Top of the 2nd, two hits but a 4, 6, 3 double play ended the inning and the threat, going to the bottom of the 2nd, still 0-0.

1:41pm- Tigers get 2 hits, RBI single for Lenerd, Tigers 1-0 though 2.

1:48pm- Still 1-0 Tigers halfway though the 3rd, Armando stuck out two in that ining

2:04pm- Loaded the bases with one out, but only get one run on a sac fly, 2-0 Tigers after 3

2:10pm- We take a quick break to get our 190 octanes, now, we are back at our seats.

2:12pm- Armando strikes out the last batter of the top of the 3rd, still 2-0 Tigers.

2:29pm-RBI double by granderson and a grand slam by Cabrera, aka manny jr, and it is now 7-0 Tigers though 4.

2:36pm- 2 more strike outs for Galarraga, and another 1-2-3 inning

2:44pm- One more run for the Tigers, 8-0 Tigers though 5.. It's looking good.

2:55pm- Oh the Rangers are on the board, they get one run to make it 8-1 though 5 and a half, but the Tigers are still playing well. That octane 190 is getting to me a little, I better slow down. But man is it good.

3:00pm- Tigers go quietly in the 6th in 6 pitches

3:09pm- Nothing for the Rangers in the 7th, we sing God Bless American first, and then Kid Rock leads us in take me out to the ball game. My buddy Drew sits down during it, to protest... He is not a kid rock fan.

3:34pm- 6 big runs for the Tigers, and it is now, god, I don't even know, I lost track, I think it is 14-1 Tigers at the end of 7

3:49- Nothing for the Rangers still 14-1 though 7 and a half.

3:58pm- One more run for the Tigers in the bottom of the 8th, it's now 15-1. Bodyne is back up pitching, this place has cleared out a lot, with the big lead.

4:10pm- Game is over, Rangers get one more, and the Tigers win 15-2. Game time is 2hrs and 56 minutes, we are walking out and deciding what our plains for the rest of the day will be.

5:02pm- We are now in the car, leaving the Detroit area, after being disappointed about the long line, one in one out, at a place we just like to call the office. Looking to regroup back at Drew's and get ready for the Pistons game tonight, since we got some tickets last minute.

6:02pm- Just got back to Drew's house to regroup before we head to stage two, the Detroit Pistons baby.

7:23pm- We are back on the rode and almost to the Palace, in the line waiting to get in.

8:00pm- We got our tickets, we are 4 rows up in 216, just off center court, not bad at all.

8:33pm- 2:46 left in the 1st, Pistons up 22-14, Bennie Bengal just won the race that they do, he also won the race they do at Comeria, he is 2-0 on the day.

8:38pm- 27-20 Pistons at the end of one. Sheed is 2 for 3 from 3.

8:54pm- 5:18 left in the 1st half, 44-28 Pistons, things are looking good, so far so good.

9:01pm- 2:49 before half, 48-30 Pistons, still looking good.

9:08pm- Afalo buzzer beater at Halftime the score is Pistons 54-38.

9:21pm- Start of the 2nd of the game, big stats of the game, besides the Pistons shooting over 60%, is Devin Harris right now as one point for the Nets, that's awesome, he has killed the Pistons this year.

9:36pm- 4:55 left in the 3rd, 68-53 still, ok, but need to clean it up a bit, look a little off this half.

9:50pm- At the end of the 3rd, 78-68, that was a bad quarter, got to pick it up.

10:01pm- 8:42 left, 10 point game, 84-74, Will Bynum is saving us, again.

10:17pm- 2:51 left 93-84, this game isn't over yet.

10:30pm- Pistons do win, 100-93 final. It wasn't prefect but at least they won, and finally clinched a playoff berth.

10:42pm- We get to our car and our starting our trip to get out of the parking lot

10:43pm-As we walked out, we turned and looked in to the glass, and if we kept going and didn't walk out the exit we walked out, we see that we would have walked right into a meet and greet autograph session with auto motion, the Pistons dance team, which would be better then sitting in traffic.. Drew adds, "I never wanted to be a bar stool more." Another highlight of the game, which is hard to explain if you haven't seen it, but the Pistons also have a fat men's dance team, spare tires, and they have this video of the Pistons mascot and two large spare tire dancers doing the dance to single ladies, if you like it then you should have put a ring on it song, it is so funny. They do the dance from the video, it is priceless. It is outstanding. We also had fun people around us at both the Pistons and the Tigers game, so that was fun, so thanks to those people.

10:49pm- I am now back in my car and heading towards 75 on my way back home, after a great day with Tigers, Pistons, Greek town buffet, drinks, and great times with friends, and now I am heading home.

10:59pm- I am now on 75 N, heading back home, going 75n to 69 w, then 27 n back home to Alma. I will be back home in less then 2hrs.

12:41pm- Made good time coming back, and I am getting of the highway by my house now... I am really tired

12:42pm- Get inside, I am home, have a glass of water and go to bed.

Tigers win big in their home opener, Pistons win, and clinch a playoff spot, what a day. Great time, Drew, you are the man. I'm right, you're wrong.

That didn't take long

Two games, that's how long it took in the new season for the Tigers bullpen, specifically our new "closer" that we signed, to blow a lead. After E Jackson pitched a great game. Lyon comes in and gives up a 3-1 lead with a 3 run homer, and then after Inge ties it in the top of the 9th, he stays in to load the bases and lose the game on a pop fly. Wow, that's great. This is going to be a very long season, if the bullpen doesn't improve. That is all I want to say about this now. I'm right, you're wrong

Tough night

Well it was a tough night for Michigan sports fans, Luckily the Wings did win, so not all was lost, but I am not a big wings fan. The Tigers got killed, and Verlander didn't look too good, In fact it took all of about 20 minutes or so, 2/3 though the first ining before my buddy Chaz gave up on the 2009 season... Man Verlander sucks, it is going to be another long year.. this was after ten minutes., of the first game. But of course to make it worse MSU got killed by UNC. Now I want to make one thing clear MSU does not suck, UNC is just really good, they were the best team all year, and they won the national title for a reason.... here are just some of the text messages I got during the game.. I got a lot more.. but I will only give you all 4 right now, cause I deleted most of them, before I had this great idea.

Greg: Worst half in the history of the championship game. MSU was too amped up. I am very disappointed

Dave B- We tried but they were awesome---- maybe the best sum up ever

greg again, after the game- worst championship game ever

and my favorite from my best friend Scott, who went to MSU.

Scott: I'm having trouble deciding which has been more compromised, the Spartans rebounding or Magic Johnson's immune system

I am going to let that sink it... that is all for tonight. Congrats to UNC, you earned, it. I'm right, you're wrong.

Tomorrow

Tomorrow is going to be a great day. Opening day for MLB baseball, sure the season started tonight with the bravs beating the phils, but it really starts tomorrow, and it is also of course the National title game. I would be looking forward to the national title game in college basketball anyway, but I am looking forward to it even more because MSU, my second favorite team, is playing in it. Also the same matchup that I predicted before the big dance started, go ahead, look at the past post, came true. UNC vs MSU. Before it started I picked UNC to win 75-63, but the way they are playing right now, I would except them to score more then 75. But MSU is also playing very well right now, so who knows. I think UNC will win, but I will be cherring really hard for MSU hoping I am wrong. I will not be shocked if MSU wins, cause they could, I would just be surpised.

The Tigers season could not get started soon enough with how bad the 08 season went, after such high hopes, so this year I am hoping for the obbosite. No one talk about them, no one expect anything, and maybe, just maybe they will have a good year. Of course their bullpen is still a mess, and their starting rotation is shaky at best. The offense should be good, and the defense better, evert and BI at short and 3rd, but if Zum Zum doesn't get back to 06 form, and Rodney has another year like last year, they may struggle again. I hope not, but that's the best thing about sports, one season is done, and you can always look forward to the next one.

The Pistons actually won today, thanks to Will Bynum going off. I really like that guy, he has played very well, it almost makes you think what if we kept billups and traded stuck for picks, um? I do think stuck will be a good pg in this league, but he has some work to do. All I am hoping for the Pistons now is of course they make the playoffs, and then somehow get to play the Magic in the first round because they would beat them. the Magic is the one team that still can't beat the Pistons. So I am hoping for that. Of course knowing my luck, they will get the Celtics and lose in 5.. but come on Magic, get that 2 seed.

I am going to bed now, and I hope I fall asleep soon, so tomorrow will be here. It will be a great day.. baseball feaver... catch it.. and Go Green, Go white. I'm right, you're wrong.

Bye Plax, AI, K Grady, and Shef to the Mets

Plaxico was someone I have been a fan of for many years. Liking MSU I watched him in college and loved what I saw. If ever my fandom was in question about him it was all put to rest in the Gator Bowl where he was the main reason MSU beat FL, in a very good college football game, one that turned out to be Plax's last. He then was drafted by the Steelers, I am not going to pretend I am a big Steeler fan, but I have no problems with them, and because he was a MSU guy and not going to a NFL team that I hated, cowboys, skins or phili especially, I continued to follow his career, collect his sports cards and memorabilia and cheer him on. Then a great move in the off season happened. The Giants, my favorite professional team in any sport signed Plax as a free agent. This was the best thing for me, a tall talented wide out for my New York Football Giants, and it was a guy who went to MSU and someone I have liked and followed since his freshmen year of college. It went well, Plax put up some good numbers, which helped not only the Giants win a lot of games, but many of my fantasy teams as well. The highlight of course would be catching the game wining touchdown in the super bowl against the undefeated, at the time, Pats. It was extra special since he predicted the Giants would win, and even came up with a score. That was laughed at, but it turned out he was very close, and in fact the Pats even scored less then he predicted. So things are going great for me, my favorite team wins a super bowl, and I am happy, the next year they start off great, they are playing like one of the best, if not the best, team in the NFL and looked to have a major chance to repeat. Even during a one game suspension by the team for missing a meeting, or showing up late, or what ever he did, wasn't a problem, the Giants rolled in the one game without him. But then it all went wrong. Plax went out to a club, fine, but he had a gun in his pants, not good, and the gun went off, really not good, and he shot himself, really really not good, and kind of embarrassing. So he is hurt, and can't play anyway. The Giants suspend him for the rest of the year, which they basically had to do, and a team that is rolling stumbles a little in to the playoffs, and then after a first round bye, loosing at home to the Eagles, a team they have already beaten twice by the way. So the year is lost, and Plax shooting himself had a lot to do with it. There are not a lot of sure things in sports, and I am not going to say if the shooting didn't happen the Giants would have won the Super Bowl, because no one can say for sure, but they would have had a lot better chance. In sports you don't get a very big window to win championships, and the fact that they won one does make me happy, but we had a real good chance to win back to back, and because of Plax, we lost that shot... sorry, bad choice of words, but I had to. So today he was released by the Giants. I can't really be upset about that choice. As much as I love Plax, lets be honest, he is going to have to spend some time in jail, and if not, he would still face a suspension by the NFL, and could even after he gets out of jail. This is just a sad end to something that was so promising. The Giants number one need is now a big time number one wide out. I don't care who, Bolden would be great, or if they are still there getting a Hicks in the draft, but they need a big time guy. I like Hixon, and S Smith is a good possion 3rd down guy, but they need a legit deep threat, and a legit number one, or they will be lucky to win 10 games next year. So long Plax, I wish you well, I hope you turn it around somewhere... just not for Dallas.. or it's over between us.

It was also announced today that AI will be out the rest of the reg. season with his back injury. I would like to be the first to call shenanigans on this. His back may not be 100%, in fact, I know it's not, but he can play. This has to do with his little outburst about rather retiring then playing so little, so the Pistons said ok, you can. If I had to bet on it, I would bet a lot of money on the fact that AI will not play for the pistons ever again. He will not be on the playoff roster, even if they actually start playing and don't miss out on the playoffs. I still think they will make it. I also still think AI could help them make a run in the playoffs this year. But there are a few problems, one, he is upset about his minutes and coming off the bench, so I am not sure if he will play hard even if giving the chance, and two, Curry may be the worst coach in the NBA in a long time. He may someday be a good coach, but a rookie coach with a veteran team, who then is forced to play a 2n year pg is a bad combination. It doesn't work, if anyone ever thought it did, just look at the 2009-2009 Pistons and you will know it doesn't work. Rookie coaches usually take over young teams, they can make mistakes together and grow. Curry took over a team who has won 50+ games for 7 years, and wanted to make one last run. If you were going to do this, trade them all away for picks and young guys, keep Ta Ta, Stuck, AA, Amir and Max, and everyone else can be new. I liked Byum and Herrmann, so they can stay, and give good minutes as your 11 and 12 guy on the bench... not as a starting pg for you, which Byum has been sometimes this year. This will also go down as a tough year for them. The problem with me, and being a fan, and of what they have done the last 7 years, I still think they can make a run. Especially if they are lucky enough to get the Magic in the first round. If that somehow happens, they will win that series. The Magic can not beat them, they have lost to them the last few years in the playoffs, usually in 5 games, and are even 0-3 this year against them. With how bad they are playing the Pistons do still have talent, which makes it that much harder, as a fan, you still see a chance for them to figure it out and make a run, and when they don't, you are even that much more upset, because you know they have some good pieces.

The Mets signed Gary Sheffield today, great move. Nothing like a guy who is basically just a DH now, because he can't move and play outfield anymore in the NL where there is no DH. So the Mets will do one of two things, use him in the outfield for the first 4 or 5 innings of games, before you have to put in a defensive replacement, or he can just be a pinch hitter for the pitching spot, during a pitching change. Great move. nothing like having a pinch hitter with 499 home runs on your bench. The Mets continue to run their team like a fantasy or video game team, big names, that look good, but don't mesh.... they will not make the playoffs.

Sticking with Michigan things, Kelvin Grady is going to leave the Michigan basketball team. Though he is fast, and has some talent, he is turnover prone, and it really isn't that big of a lose. I will let a few of my friends who are Michigan fans give their thoughts:

Me: So what do you think about Grady leaving
Chaz: Yeah it really hurts to lose your 3rd string pg, who is undersized and a turnover waiting to happen... It's a big lose, I don't know how we are going to recover.

Me: Hey did you see Grady is leaving Michigan
Phil: Overdue. We should have known he'd suck, he went to EGR

Phil's EGR line was purely sucking up, since EGR, which is East Grand Rapids, is the rival high school to Forest Hills Central, a high school which I am a proud 2001 graduated of.

either way for the Friday before the final four, this turned out to be a big sports day, at least for guys with Michigan ties. BTW if you didn't see the college 3 point and dunk contest last night, you should watch it when they re air it. The dunk contest was very good. I'm right, you're wrong.

Wow April is great

I was reading the sports guys mailbag, he is the man, and one of his readers asked the question what is the best sports month, and he said April, and started listing sporting events that happen in April. I never even thought how great of a month this is. You have the final four, opening day for baseball, the NBA and NFL playoffs state, the NFL draft, the Masters, and then as he also mentioned, he has halter top day. Every where that has seasons can appreciate halter top day, it is a great thing. We all know what it is, that first day of spring where the weather gets warmer, and the girls wear less. It is a wonderful time of year, especially around a college town. I remember back when I was in school, before I graduated and got old, and had a family and stuff, I would walk around with my rm Phil and we would wonder where all these good looking girls came from. For awhile we even thought they may have been a rule of some kind that good looking girls didn't have to go to class if it was under 45 degrees. Cause all winter you see everyone in sweet shirts and jackets, and then all of a sudden.. BAM, good looking girls everywhere... it's a special time.

Moving on more to sports, the final four this weekend should be great. I hope MSU wins but Uconn of course is very good, so it could go either way, I picked UNC and MSU to get to the title game when the brackets came out, and at least that still has a chance to happen. UNC is playing so good right now,I do not see them loosing. But Nova is not play, so they will need to continue to play well.

IMO the Bears just gave up way way way way too much for Jay Cutler, but we'll see. Two number ones, a 3 and Orten, for Cutler and a 5, wow. If the Pats were doing this trade they would have gotten Cutler for a 4th rounder at most. The Bears also signed O Pace yesterday too, so they are doing all they can to get better. And in that division if you are 10-6, maybe even 9-7, you could win the division, and with 2 games against the Lions, you have two wins, home games vs the Viks, and Packers, should be two more, and you are already at 4. So they could very well win that division, we will see what the rest of the conference does. I am also interested to see what Denver does now with their two picks.

BTW congrats to PSU for wining the NIT. Yes it is the NIT, so no one really cares, but this is just another example of how underrated the big ten was. PSU, the 8th best team in the big ten, wins the NIT, and beats the 8th best from the big east in the semi's and then the 6th best in the big 12 in the finals. I am telling you, the national fans and media can hate on them all you want, but the numbers don't lie, the big ten is a very good conference. In college basketball this year, the big east was of course first, because one of how many teams, and two because their top teams were just as good as any in the nation, and then the big ten and acc are right there at two and three. I think the ACC has a better top to the conference, but the big ten has a better bottom, and more depth. really 9 out of 11 teams in the big ten were good, and could beat anyone on any giving day. Just something I wanted to add, against the big east is clearly the best.. but it is time people outside of the Midwest gave the big ten some love.

Enjoy a great sports weekend. I'm right, you're wrong.

Waiting for the weekend

With the final four this weekend, course it is one of the biggest sports weekends of the year, but there are some things to watch before the weekend begins. The NIT semis last night, wasn't too bad, as PSU and Baylor will be playing in the finals on Thursday, it should be a good game. Baseball starts Sunday night, and then a full schedule of games on opening day on Monday, also when the national title game is. That may be one of the best sporting days of the year. Tonight we have the Mcd's all American game. Which is usually very entertaining and it is always a nice chance to watch the future stars of college right now. I am hoping very much that next year, someone that I coach will be playing in the game. He is good enough that is for sure, I guess it all depends on being hyped the right way to get there. But I am looking forward to the game tonight. I will quickly talk about a few other sports stories that are going on right now.

-coach Cal going to Ken, this isn't too surprising I don't really know too many people that would turn down over 30 million dollars over 8 years. Ken is a little down the last few years, but with UCLA, Kansas, UNC, and maybe even Indiana, those are still the top 5 jobs as far as basketball schools and the rich history and tradition they have. IU will be back, after getting a new coach last year, and of course the other 3 are still big time players. It will be interesting to see if that entire class that he had coming to Memphis, which was very good, included the top recruit by some, will follow him to Ken. He also is kind of known for getting those big name players, and giving their dad, uncle, cousin, or brother, a job on his staff, with some good money, it will be interesting if he does the same thing in Ken. Since some things that you can get away with in conference usa, cause it's conference USA, and who really cares, you may not be able to get away with in the SEC. Time will tell, I am sure he will do fine on the court, and depending on if Paterson and Meeks comes back, they would be very good next year.

-Cutler will be traded now- after a few weeks of trade me, no we are not going to, Denver has finally admitted that they can't have Cutler has their Qb. So before his first preseason even begins the new coach runs out the franchise qb, who is only 25 and is coming off a pro bowl. Nice job. The Lions, Bears, Jets and Bucks have all expressed interest already. I would think the Viks might want to get in on it to. There were also reports that the Skins were also interested. No matter where he goes he would help any of those teams right away. If the Lions got him, they could win maybe 5 games next year, and in that division, maybe even 6. I don't think they will because that would actually make their team better, and I don't know if they would want that.

-Donate is going to go to jail- Donate Stallworth will be tried for DUI manslaughter in the case that lead to a man dieing. Basically he is going to jail and playing in the NFL again is the least of his worries. One, you were drunk, two you were driving, and three, someone died, that's not good. I would be shocked if he doesn't serve at least a year, and he should serve more.

-Two men died at Vilma's condo- He wasn't there, and he has been trying to sell it, since he says 2007, but it is just not a good thing to be involved with. Even if he had nothing to do with it, and I hope he didn't, it still doesn't look good, because if it happened there, that means maybe someone in his family did do it, or had something to do with it.

-We have to wait some more- Plex was in and out of court yesterday in like 15 minutes, and they pushed back his trial to June. This tells me they are going to try as hard as they can to get a deal, and for this case never to go to trial. I like Plex and I have for a very long time, being a MSU boy, then being a Giant, but I will wait for this to play it's course. I would love to say that the Giants don't need him, but they kind of showed they do. Unless they get a Bolden or someone like that, they need him, just as much as he needs them.

That's it for now, looking forward to the weekend very much, and the game tonight. I'm right, you're wrong.
